And apparently the longest post ever. Sorry. It is mainly for me to remember what happened. :) Pictures are in reverse order at the end.
Last Wednesday, after I made the post about John Henry being sick, I took him to the doctor. They tested him for strep and pricked his finger. He was really brave about the finger prick. He just said, "What is that?" when he saw the blood. Throat culture, not so brave. :) Turns out he just had a fever virus. Dr. Amason told me to keep his hands off of Macey as much as possible. Not so easy!
Friday night at 10 pm I noticed Macey felt really hot. I had just been telling my mom that she was acting funny and I didn't think she felt well, so I took her temp. It was 101.5. I texted Laudan to call me back b/c I couldn't remember at what temp you were supposed to call the doctor. She called me back and told me 100.5, so I called.
The nurse called me back and told me that any infant that has a temp of 100.5 or above has to go to the ER for lab work, but we wouldn't have to wait b/c she was so young that she would get priority. John Henry was lying on the couch with Kurt about to fall asleep and in his pjs. Both Kurt and I were in our pjs. I had on no makeup and had just gotten out of the shower so my hair was all frizzy, but we threw on clothes and rushed to the ER. I was thinking lab work would be a heel stick or something so we just decided to go to the Cullman hospital that is 2 minutes from our house, rather than going to Children's.
When we got there, there were lots of people in the ER. Kurt signed us in while John Henry, Macey, and I waited in the outside hallway. Kurt went in to ask if we had priority, and the woman looked at him like we were nuts and told him no. I went in to tell her what the nurse had said, but she really didn't care. So we called my mom to get the number to Children's. We knew by the time we waited there, we could be at Children's. We got called back to get Macey admitted, and we asked about the priority. She didn't know, so wouldn't let her admit Macey until I called Children's to make sure she wouldn't have to wait there. Meanwhile, Kurt was telling her how many times he has waited there; once when he was having an asthma attack. I know she thought we were the biggest jerks. Children's said we wouldn't have to wait, so we literally ran to the car and turned on the hazards and flew to Birmingham.
When we got to Children's at midnight, we went right back. (Well, right after I saw some kid puke in the waiting room.) Macey's temp was 101.7. They gave her tylenol and sent her to a room.
The doctor came in to talk to us, and she said a "full workup" was a urine catheter, IV in the hand, and a spinal tap. At that point, we were so very thankful that God led us to Children's instead of the Cullman hospital. The Cullman hospital doesn't have a very good reputation; plus, Children's deals only with children (obviously), so I felt better about them sticking a needle into my 5 week old's back!
First they did the urine catheter. It was horrible to watch them hold her down while she was screaming. The first one didn't work; the nurse thought some cream got into the tube and blocked it, so they had to do another one. The second one only got a drop of urine. It was the tiniest amount ever.
While they were doing the catheter, I was crying. I picked up Macey and was holding her, and Kurt was holding John Henry. John Henry started rubbing her head and said, "Don't cry Macey." Then he looked at Kurt and said, "I love my baby sister. I don't want her to cry." So that made us cry even harder. :) It was so sweet!
Next they had to do the IV. They put a tourniquet on her arm for what seemed like forever while they looked for a vein. She was screaming the whole time. Then they did the IV which was horrible as well. That IV didn't bleed back (?) so they had to do another one! The 2nd one was just as bad as the first, but at least it bled. They had to squeeze her little arm so tight to get enough blood. The whole catheter and IV process took at least 30 minutes, which seems like forever when you are watching people hurt your little baby!
Next they did the spinal tap, but they wouldn't let me or Kurt try to comfort her during it. We were just allowed to sit in a chair and watch. I didn't thinks he would remember if I was in there or not, so we went outside the room for that one. We could hear her screaming, so we just prayed that she would be okay. It didn't take very long, so we got to go back in and pick her up.
I remember that being 1:47 am. John Henry was still going strong. He was being an angel! Of course he was touching everything in the nasty hospital, but he wasn't even acting tired.
We had to wait until 3:00 am when the doctor came back in and said they didn't have enough urine for the culture. We had to decide whether or not we wanted to bag her and wait for her to tee tee or just do another catheter. Since the culture would take at least 30 min. we decided to go ahead and do the catheter. I know that sounds horrible, and if we hadn't had John Henry out at 3 am, we might have waited, but we were so ready to get out of there! Thankfully that one worked perfectly!
At 4:15 the doctor came in and told us everything looked perfect and she probably had John Henry's fever virus. We could go home and just follow up with our pediatrician (who they actually called and talked to at 4 am; I didn't know they did that) on Saturday at 10:30. We finally got out of there around 4:45 am. John Henry was still wide awake. I mean he was the in best mood running and playing. On the way out the door, I had to stop him from going to play with some toys in the waiting room. He fell asleep in the car at 5 am in Gardendale. This totally proves my theory that John Henry doesn't require much sleep and that he would stay up all night if I would let him. It was truly amazing! Kurt and I felt like we had been run over by a truck.
We got home around 6 am. I carried John Henry up to bed and changed his pjs that had touched all of the nasty hospital. I fed Macey and finally went to sleep around 6:30 am. We had to wake up at 8:30 am to make out 10:30 am doctor's appt. in Birmingham. We were exhausted.
At the doctor's appt. Dr. Gilbert was so nice. She put us ahead of everyone since we were just there for a quick check. Then we went home to sleep! John Henry even had a hard time going to sleep for his nap at 2 pm that day- even with only sleeping from 5-9:30!
This should be the end, but unfortunately it isn't!
Sunday morning Macey and I got up at 8:30 am and went downstairs to watch The Office. :) The phone rang at 8:50. It was Children's Hospital calling. I was so sure that they were calling to check on us, but they weren't. She was calling to tell us that Macey's spinal fluid had grown bacteria and that we needed to pack bags b/c she would probably be admitted. When I told her that she didn't even have a fever, she said that it could be a contaminated vial. I have never been so scared in my life! I was pretty sure that it was contamination b/c Macey seemed fine, but still. I ran to wake up Kurt and John Henry, and we got showers, packed our bags, dropped John Henry off at my mom's, and went back to the ER.
They got her right back (thank the Lord b/c Kurt saw a girl throwing up and I heard some mom say that her son was vomitting bile), and the pediatrician and the nurse practictioner came in to see her. They said that she looked so good that they it must be contamination, but they wanted to make sure. We had to wait about 3 hours while they checked the type of bacteria. They still weren't 100%, but they said since she looked so good and didn't have a fever that we could go home and check in with our pediatrican the following day.
The next day we went back to the pediatrician. Dr. Amason said that we really stumped everyone at the ER, and they had to call the head of emergency medicine to make sure it was okay to send her home. He assured me that going to Children's was the right thing b/c no doctor wants to see a 5 week old baby for a spinal tap. On Tuesday her case was officially closed (sounds like Law and Order) and she is fine! Praise the Lord! It was such a scary weekend, but it really made us realize how blessed we are.
Right now we are all sick again. John Henry has a cough. Kurt and I have bad sinus problems, and I can't even take any meds. I have lost my voice. Do you have any idea how hard it is to go places with a 2 year old when you have no voice!? And Macey has a little cough and a stuffy nose. I am calling the doctor tomorrow about her cough. I am praying it is nothing and that we don't have to go to our 10th doctor's appointment in 2 weeks!

Hospital bracelet and oxygen thing (no clue what it is called).

Her poor little hands after the IVs came out. Please ignore my messy car. It really is terrible, and the worst part is that I just cleaned it a few days before this.

The ER on Sunday.

An M&M snack at 4 am. Please excuse the way I look- no makeup, I had been crying for hours, and my hair wasn't straightened.

2 IVs. One in each hand. :(

Getting checked out when we first got there.
